Galilee Center will host a No-Contact Backpack Giveaway event to distribute much-needed school supplies to East Coachella Valley children grades K thru High School. Sponsored by a BIGHORN Golf Club Charities 2019 Grant and supported by private donors, the backpacks will be filled with age/grade appropriate materials including notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, folders, and binders.
In previous years, Galilee’s Backpack Drive has served over 800 children and there is an expected 20% increase this year due to the pandemic. This year’s event will be a no-contact, mandatory mask, drive thru event coming at a crucial time where Covid-19 has already greatly impacted impoverished individuals and families. In addition to causing uncertainty for the upcoming academic year, many kids may not return to a traditional education model due to proposed distance learning and hybrid plans. However, they require the same “back-to-school” supplies. Galilee Center is hopeful the Backpack Giveaway will encourage kids to continue to learn and grow by setting a positive tone for the start of the school year.
